Monterey Select Board
Minutes of the meeting of 7/7/14

Meeting Opened at: 9am
Select Board Members Present: Wayne Burkhart, Chairperson, Scott Jenssen and Kenn Basler

Also in attendance for parts of the meeting:  Jacob Edelman for the Monterey News, Robert Lazzarini, Roger Tryon, Steve Weisz, Michael Banner, Gareth Backhaus, Maynard Forbes, Donald Hopkins, Pete Beckwith, Julio Rodriguez and Larry Klein

The board met with Chief of Police, Gareth Backhaus to review the following:
1.  Weekly report was reviewed.
2.  The Chief noted that he is becoming concerned about the number of bear/people calls that the police are receiving.

Miscellaneous Select Board Items Reviewed:
1.  Kenn inquired about instituting monthly meetings with the Fire Chief, the Board agreed and asked M. Noe to schedule them.  Kenn wants to have a discussion with the Fire Chief about the management of emergency calls.
2.  Wayne spoke with Bethany and she felt that since Pat was still employed for her department through the end of July she didn’t feel it necessary to have Mari cover while she was on vacation this month.
3.  Kenn has spoken to Julio about the Deputy Harbormaster confusion and all is set.  The Harbormaster is Chief Backhaus and all calls should go to 528-3211.
4.  Kenn also spoke with the Montereyfest organizers and they are having each boat owner that will be giving rides that day get a rider on their insurance.  Kenn suggested that in the winter the Board open up the conversations again about how much the Town should be/will be involved in these festivities.
5.  The Board and resume review group discussed how the interviews should be conducted today and tomorrow and what the standard questions asked should be.
6.  Julio Rodriguez came in to thank the highway department for the work done on the town owned portion of Sylvan Rd.
7.  Mail was reviewed which included:
a.  Letter from New Marlborough inviting the Board to a meeting on Monday night with Smitty Pignatelli.  The Board was disappointed at the amount of notice given for the meeting and will be unable to attend as they have their 1st evening meeting that night.
b.  Letter from Susan Popper and Rocky Greenberg regarding the Historical Commission. (see attached)
c.  Letter from Christa and Ian Lindsay regarding the Historical Commission. (see attached)
8.  Executive Secretary’s weekly report was reviewed.

Before conducting the interviews the Board reviewed the Open Meeting Law and what the exceptions were that allowed a Board to go into Executive Session and it was determined that interviewing candidates and the selection of that candidate must be in a public meeting.

10 – 10:50am the Board interviewed Donald Hopkins for the position of Director of Operations.  The resume review group and the Board discussed how they felt the interview went and how they feel about Don as an applicant.

At 11:05 – 11:45am the Board interviewed Pete Beckwith for the position of Director of Operations.  The resume review group and the Board discussed how they felt the interview went and how they feel about Pete as an applicant.

A motion was made and unanimously approved to adjourn the meeting at: 12:07am
